Building the North Texas Life Science Ecosystem:
One Conversation at a Time
|
One of the defining characteristics of a successful innovation ecosystem is the willingness of leaders, organizations, and companies to come together to share knowledge, build relationships, and advance a region's future.
That spirit was on full display recently as BioNTX was part of welcoming leaders from CRB to Pegasus Park and BioLabs for an inside look at the momentum driving North Texas' growing life science ecosystem. A highlight of the visit was a panel discussion featuring Gina Ford, CEO of BioNTX; Matthew Crommett of Lyda Hill Philanthropies and LH Capital; Kelly Cloud of the Dallas Regional Chamber; and Gabby Everett of BioLabs. Together, they shared perspectives on the unique collaboration that continues to fuel innovation across the region. While each panelist brought a different viewpoint, a common theme emerged: North Texas succeeds because of its collaborative culture. The region's strength is found not only in its institutions and infrastructure, but in the relationships and community leaders who have a shared vision for growth.
The visit also highlighted the important role CRB plays in supporting the life science industry nationwide. As a leader in the design and delivery of advanced life science facilities, CRB has helped create spaces where innovation can thrive—including the laboratories at Pegasus Park and BioLabs that are helping accelerate emerging biotech companies in North Texas.
BioNTX extends its sincere appreciation to CRB for spending time with our community and to Lynne Meers for her leadership, diligence, and continued support in helping showcase the remarkable opportunities emerging throughout North Texas.

AstraZeneca’s Imfinzi Approved for
High-Risk Early Bladder Cancer in the U.S.
|
AstraZeneca’s Imfinzi (durvalumab) has been approved in the U.S. in combination with BCG induction and maintenance therapy for adults with BCG-naïve, high-risk Non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC). The FDA approval is based on the Phase III POTOMAC trial, which showed the combination reduced the risk of recurrence, progression, or death compared with BCG alone. The therapy represents the first new treatment approach in this setting in more than 30 years.

Johnson & Johnson Reports Positive Phase 3 Results for
Apalutamide in High-Risk Prostate Cancer
|
Johnson & Johnson announced positive Phase 3 PROTEUS study results showing that apalutamide with hormone therapy improved outcomes for patients with high-risk localized or locally advanced prostate cancer undergoing surgery. The combination was given before and after prostatectomy and significantly increased the likelihood of minimal or no cancer remaining at surgery, while also reducing the risk of metastasis or death and extending time before additional treatment was needed.

UT Arlington Study Links Estrogen Loss to Liver Inflammation
and Increased Heart Disease Risk After Menopause
|
Researchers at the University of Texas at Arlington have identified new mechanisms linking estrogen loss after menopause to increased cardiovascular disease risk, highlighting the liver and immune system as key drivers. The study found that declining estrogen disrupts cholesterol metabolism and increases inflammation, in part through elevated activity of the immune-related enzyme IDO1, leading to impaired cholesterol clearance and systemic inflammatory changes. The findings suggest that hormone linked metabolic and immune pathways could serve as potential targets for future therapies aimed at reducing heart disease risk in postmenopausal women.

UT Southwestern Study Reveals Direct DNA Transfer
Between Human Cells That Can Alter Cell Function
|
Scientists at UT Southwestern Medical Center’s Children’s Medical Center Research Institute have discovered that large pieces of DNA can move directly between human cells through nanotubes and remain functional in recipient cells. Published in Cell, the study shows transferred DNA can integrate into the genome, persist through cell division, and alter cell behavior, challenging the long-held view that human cell genomes evolve independently. Researchers say the findings could reshape understanding of cancer development, genome instability, and how cells influence one another.

Nucleate Dojo is an undergraduate biotech program launching in September 2026 in partnership with SMU, UTD, and UTSW. The program helps undergrads break into the biotech industry through a faculty and industry seminar series, hands-on skills workshops, and mini-projects built around biotech industry problem statements, culminating in a final competition for cash prizes.
They are looking for professionals to get involved in any of the following roles (feel free to choose more than one):
- Speaker – Lead a topic-specific seminar (~1 hour, plus curriculum prep).
- Facilitator – Lead a hands-on workshop (~1 hour, plus activity prep).
- Mentor – Join project work time during workshops (1 hour/workshop, ~9 hours total) and stay accessible to student teams between sessions for questions and guidance.
This is a great way to support the next generation of biotech talent in Dallas. Programming will take place at the aforementioned institutions. Participation is in your own individual capacity.
