Colossal Biosciences Hatches First Chicks Using Fully Artificial Egg System in Breakthrough for De-Extinction Efforts
Colossal Biosciences announced a major breakthrough after successfully hatching 26 healthy chicks using a fully artificial egg system designed to replicate the conditions of natural avian incubation. The system uses a 3D-printed structure with a bioengineered silicone membrane that mimics eggshell gas exchange, allowing embryos to develop outside a traditional shell while being continuously monitored. The company says the technology could scale de-extinction efforts for extinct birds like the moa and dodo while also improving conservation and reproductive science for endangered species.
