TCU & UTSW Launch Maternal Health Initative

Fort Worth’s 76104 ZIP code once faced an infant mortality rate of 19 deaths per 1,000 live births—more than three times the national average—and North Texas continues to experience some of the highest maternal morbidity rates in the country.

To change this trajectory, the Anne Burnett Marion School of Medicine at Texas Christian University and UT Southwestern Medical Center have launched a transformative initiative: the North Texas Maternal Health Accelerator (MHA). This regional effort brings together leading academic medical centers, hospitals, and community partners to reduce severe obstetric complications and establish a national model for maternal care. With the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex delivering more babies annually than 30 U.S. states, the region offers a powerful proving ground for maternal health innovations.

The MHA has already begun implementing its first program, targeting the most common severe obstetric complication with a surprisingly simple, evidence-based solution.
