UT Southwestern researchers discovered a previously unrecognized sequence of abnormal brain activity across multiple regions involved in Parkinson’s disease, offering new insight into how dopamine loss contributes to symptoms. The study analyzed brain signals from 23 patients undergoing deep brain stimulation surgery and identified distinct low-beta and high-beta signals with different roles across interconnected brain regions. The findings could lead to more precise and responsive deep brain stimulation treatments by allowing doctors to measure and target these signals separately.
