UT Southwestern Receives ARPA‑H Award to Develop Functioning Artificial Livers

UT Southwestern Medical Center has been awarded up to $25 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA‑H) to advance the VITAL project, which aims to bioprint functioning artificial livers from patients’ own cells using cutting‑edge 3D printing and regenerative technologies to help address the critical shortage of donor organs.  If successful, the engineered livers could reduce transplant wait times, eliminate the need for lifelong immunosuppression, and also serve as platforms for drug testing and liver disease research.
