UTA Students Win National Invention Award for Wearable Wrist Device to Support Stroke Recovery

Two University of Texas at Arlington electrical engineering and computer science students, Suyog Neupane and Kritazya Upreti, won first place in the university-level division of the 2026 National Academy of Inventors GenSpiration Prize Competition for developing a lightweight wearable soft robotic wrist exoskeleton designed to assist stroke rehabilitation. The device uses a compact pneumatic soft actuator to enable multiple wrist movements, including flexion/extension and radial/ulnar motion, while reducing the weight and complexity of traditional rehabilitation devices. Developed through UTA’s Biomedical Technologies Lab at the UT Arlington Research Institute, the innovation highlights the university’s focus on robotics, biomedical engineering, and technologies that improve patient recovery outcomes.
